Per Post, Not Lifetime

Instagram benchmarks are measured one post at a time. Use your average post, not your all-time totals.

Why Instagram Numbers Look Small

Instagram engagement is measured against followers, while TikTok and YouTube are measured against views and LinkedIn against impressions. A follower count is far larger than the audience any single post actually reaches, so the resulting percentage is far smaller. Socialinsider put the 2025 Instagram average at 0.48% per post and Rival IQ reports a 0.30% median, against 3.85% on TikTok. A 0.5% Instagram rate is healthy. The same figure on TikTok would not be. Formula

(likes + comments) / followers

Instagram engagement rate is the sum of likes and comments on a post divided by your total followers. Instagram divides by followers rather than views or impressions, so the number is not comparable to a TikTok or LinkedIn rate.

Engagement Benchmarks

Source

Based on: Socialinsider Social Media Benchmarks (70 million posts analysed)

Methodology: Socialinsider takes the sum of likes and comments on a post, divides it by the total number of followers that page has, and multiplies the result by 100. Across 70 million posts published between January 2024 and December 2025 that produced a 0.48% average for 2025, down from 0.50% in 2024. Rival IQ reports a 0.30% median on the same followers basis.

Below Average

0.00% - 0.30%

Your engagement is below 0.3%. That sits under the 0.30% Rival IQ median and well under the 0.48% Socialinsider 2025 average. Try carousels, which Socialinsider measured at 0.55%, and posts that invite a reply.

Average

0.30% - 0.70%

Your engagement is 0.3-0.7%. The 0.48% Socialinsider 2025 average and the 0.30% Rival IQ median both sit in this range, so you are performing in line with typical Instagram accounts.

Strong

0.70% - 1.50%

Your engagement is 0.7-1.5%, comfortably above the 0.48% Socialinsider 2025 average and roughly double the 0.30% Rival IQ median. Your followers are reliably interacting with your posts.

Exceptional

1.50% - 100.00%

Your engagement exceeds 1.5%, more than three times the 0.48% Socialinsider 2025 average and five times the 0.30% Rival IQ median. This is top tier for a follower-based rate.

About Auto-Fill

Where auto-fill is offered, it reads public profile data through the Instagram Graph API, which can only see Instagram Business and Creator accounts. Personal accounts are invisible to it, and so are private accounts of any type. Auto-fill also averages your most recent posts rather than reading every post you have published. If auto-fill is not shown, or your handle cannot be read, enter your numbers by hand. The calculation is identical either way.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Find Your Follower Count

Take the follower count shown on your profile. This is the denominator, and it is the same for every post you measure.

  2. 2

    Average Your Recent Posts

Add up the likes across your last ten or twelve posts and divide by how many posts that was. Do the same for comments. Averaging smooths out the one post that did unusually well.

  3. 3

    Read Your Band

The calculator applies the formula (likes + comments) / followers and places the result in bands built around the Socialinsider average, so you can see whether you are below average, average, strong, or exceptional for Instagram specifically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Socialinsider analysed 70 million posts published between January 2024 and December 2025 and found an average Instagram engagement rate of 0.48% per post in 2025, down from 0.50% in 2024. Rival IQ reports a 0.30% median across a different sample. This calculator treats below 0.3% as below average, 0.3% to 0.7% as average, 0.7% to 1.5% as strong, and above 1.5% as exceptional.

Why is my Instagram rate so much lower than my TikTok rate?

Because the two are divided by different things. Instagram engagement rate is measured against your total followers, most of whom will never see any given post. TikTok is measured against views, which only counts people who actually saw it. The same amount of real engagement produces a much smaller number on Instagram. Neither figure is wrong, and neither can be compared to the other.

Should I enter one post or an average?

An average of your recent posts. The published benchmark is a per-post figure, so entering the combined likes from a year of posting over your current follower count produces a rate many times too high. Ten to twelve recent posts is a reasonable sample.

Does auto-fill work for personal accounts?

No. The Instagram Graph API can only read public Business and Creator accounts, so personal and private accounts cannot be looked up by any tool, including this one. Switching to a Creator account in the Instagram app is free. Otherwise, manual entry produces exactly the same result.

Do saves and shares count?

Not in this calculation. Socialinsider computes the benchmark from likes and comments only, so this tool uses the same two terms. Adding saves and shares would produce a higher number that could not be compared against the published average. Saves and shares are worth tracking, just not in this ratio.

How do I improve my Instagram engagement rate?

Carousels outperform single images in the Socialinsider data, at 0.55% against 0.33%, largely because a carousel gets a second chance to be shown. Reels sit at 0.48%. Beyond format, replying to comments quickly, posting on a consistent rhythm, and pruning inactive followers all move the ratio, the last one because followers are the denominator.
